Course Description

The 2021 Cornell International Summer Debate Camp is scheduled for Saturday July 31- Sunday August 8, and will be fully online. The camp will focus mainly on the World Schools Debate format (WSD), combined with instruction that has all-format relevance. This blended approach will help prepare students to excel in high-school and university-level debating no matter where they live. The camp is unique because it gives students access to Cornell professor lectures on social issues, where the content of those lectures becomes the topic of student debates. This depth of coaching experience and academic knowledge is used to emphasize the big picture of what makes a good argument about timely topics, ensuring that such fundamentals carry over not only to any competitive format but also classroom and life applications.

The 2021 camp will adopt a hybrid format, using Canvas as the central hub. The primary model will be synchronous activity using Zoom — lectures, workshops, Q&A sessions, office hours, small cohort meetings, and each round of the tournament. Additional learning materials (including a limited amount of pre-work delivered before the first day of camp), as well as recordings of the all-camp sessions, will be available for asynchronous completion.

Benefits to the Learner

Upon completion, the learner will be able to:

  • Learn and apply the tactics and strategies of WSD and other debate formats.

  • Interact with peers from around the world.

  • Gain first-hand experience and training from Cornell experts.
